November Release of Black Lab Linux

Dear Black Lab Linux Customers,

The November release (shipped on Friday, November 3rd) of Black Lab Linux introduces the new packages offered with Champion Server 1.2.1, a beta kernel which supports 1 GB RAM, in addition to a series of scripts that greatly simplify installation and configuration of a cluster. These scripts configure DHCP, NFS, DNS, rsync, and network interface configuration files to provide for the easy introduction of nodes to a server.

The HOWTO and README with additional information is contained in the /home/bll-admin/doc/ directory.

When a node is introduced, simply connect the new node to the network (via ethernet or Myrinet) and hold the "n" key while booting. The node automatically searches the LAN, net boots from the server, auto-formats its internal drive, and installs Black Lab Linux. On a 500 MHz G4 with Myrinet, this entire process requires roughly 12 minutes.

In addition, the November release offers an experimental kernel which supports dual-processors. A kernel that offers both 1 GB RAM *and* dual-processor support will be made available in short order.

Sincerely,
kai
