Momentum Computer Teams with Terra Soft to Offer Yellow Dog Linux with PowerPC-Based Embedded Systems

Robust Linux Platform Enables Seamless Migration from Development to End Use

CARLSBAD, Calif. - September 03, 2003 - Momentum Computer, an innovative developer specializing in quick turnaround of high-performance board-level solutions, has announced that all of their PowerPC-based single-board computers will now be available with the complete Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) operating system package from Terra Soft Solutions, Inc. of Loveland, Colo. effective immediately. Derived from the popular Red Hat Linux, Terra Soft has packaged this open source operating system to assure unparalleled ease-of-use, compatibility and transparency when running on PowerPC platforms such as Momentum's Civet and Puma single-board computers (SBC).

"By bundling Yellow Dog with our Power PC offerings, we are providing customers with an elegant and comprehensive open source solution that is not only cost effective and fast, but couples a host of robust features with ease-of-use more commonly associated with costly packaged software. This reduces time, effort, and cost in code development," stated Momentum's president, Harry L. White. "The popularity of Linux has really taken off and Terra Soft's YDL implementation is a robust, mature operating system that is simple to install, offers a choice of user interfaces and includes literally hundreds of the most recent, stable versions of open source applications, developer tools and utilities," he added.

Terra Soft's co-founder and CEO, Kai Staats noted, "We are pleased that Momentum has chosen to offer Yellow Dog Linux with their PowerPC offerings. Momentum is unique in that their time to market is unsurpassed, their development team rich with experience, and their products appropriately priced and well-supported. With Yellow Dog Linux, the end-user now has a seamless code migration path from the development workstation to the target board - no need for cross-platform, cross-compilation. By completing the Momentum package with YDL, customers will enjoy a truly comprehensive, powerful and flexible solution."

Momentum's popular Civet and Puma boards will now be available with version 3.0 of Yellow Dog. These computers are suited for a diverse range of uses from traditional embedded systems and telecommunications to sophisticated clustering applications:
  • Civet-C - low-power, low cost PowerPC CompactPCI Single Board Computer with 2 PMC slots for I/O versatility.

  • Puma-A - PMC form factor Single Board Computer designed for high performance embedded applications, featuring 2 Ethernet ports, and Monarch or Non-monarch system operation.

  • Puma-C - high performance PowerPC CompactPCI Single Board Computer with gigabit Ethernet support for PICMG 2.16. The Puma-CR is a similar, lower cost SBC without PICMG 2.16 support.

Available now with delivery times of two to four weeks, pricing for OEM quantities of Puma boards starts below $2000, while Civet boards start below $1500 including the Yellow Dog Linux package.
