Mercury Cell - based Solutions

  1. What software packages do I get with the MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3 - Base Package?
The MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3 - Base Package from Mercury consists of (2) software packages; the MultiCore Framework (MCF) and the Trace Analysis Tool and Library (TATL). MCF is a comprehensive API supporting multi-core CPUs including Cell, and TATL is a visual profiling and debugging tool that works in a manner similar to a software logic analyzer. More information can be found on both the Mercury and Terra Soft Solutions websites.

  2. What are the licensing terms for the MultiCore Plus SDK for PS3 - Base Package?
The SDK is licensed to run on a specific PS3 console and provides for a single user development seat. Each console that has an installed SDK or that runs SDK software must have a separate license. The MCF and TATL packages contained in the SDK have been modified to run only on PS3 hardware. The price of the Base Package is $399.

  3. Why the term "- Base Package"? Is there an "Extended Package"?
Mercury plans to release the Scientific Algorithm Library (SAL) for PS3 in the near future. This is the first of additional "add-ons" to the base package.

  4. Is there a difference between the MCF and TATL packages released for the PS3, and those in the MultiCore Plus SDK which support Mercury and IBM hardware?
There are slight differences in MCF only. The MCF version in the PS3 SDK has been modified to run only on the PS3, and limits the number of SPEs supported to 6. Of course, there are also hardware differences such as the amount of XDR memory and lack of DDR memory which could affect code portability between platforms.
