Tom Gorman, Principal of Triad 773, writes
"My story is rather unremarkable to some perhaps, but the value of what it allows me to do is what's important."
"I loaded Yellow Dog Linux on my stock 6400 PowerPC (200mhz/2.4BG hd with 80 mb of memory) and set it up as a file server running Netatalk and Samba. Setting up Netatalk was as easy setting up any other Appletalk share. The Samba took a bit of reading, but once I understood the components of its configuration text file, it was pretty straightforward. All I had to do from there was crank up the protocols, set up the share on my Wintel machine, and Walla! cross-platform network! Running these two protocols enables me to share files between development platforms on my G4/400 PowerMac and the Athlon machine running Windows 2000 (dual-booted with Mandrake Linux) seamlessly."
"I had tried installing another Linux distro on the 6400 before, but only Yellow Dog had the ability to install on my aged equipment, giving it a new lease on life! I am very pleased with the flexibility and value of your distribution. Your distribution of Linux with its video drivers auto-sensed my old 14" Hewlett-Packard Super-VGA monitor without a Viewsonic adapter (I happened to be short an adapter that day and thought I'd try it for fun ... very happy it worked regardless!)."
"This enables me to crank up the server and turn off the monitor after it's up and running. Weeks seem go by and I forget if it is even still on, except for the fact I still see my shares on the respective desktops. It has been running pretty consistently for about two months at a crack, though I do power down for occasionally brutal thunderstorm. Thanks for the great (and forgiving) Macintosh version of Linux, and keep up the good work!"
