TOPIC: Sony Ericsson GC83 Edge PC Card
Introduction
With the inclusion of the 2.6.15 kernel, the serial_cs driver required to enable PCMCIA modems (dialup,
cell phone) functions well. As such, we are pleased to offer support for the Sony Ericsson GC83 Edge PC
(PCMCIA) card. With the inclusion of just two text scripts on your laptop, you will be 100% free, on-line
from anywhere in the world that Edge technology and your cell phone provider are supported.
This particular HOWTO contains 2 scripts that are geared for my own provider, Cingular, and the GC83
(not GC82) card. Subtle modification to the following script (or a peek at the original) should quickly
enable support for other providers and models.
I owe the function of my card and availability of these scripts to Riyan Mynuddin who posted this Sony Ericsson GC83 on
Linux HOWTO and my associate Jeff of www.blagblagblag.org who patiently prodded the following scripts into finally giving in and
... just working.
The scripts
Place cingular in /etc/chatscripts/ where you will likely need to create
the directory "chatscripts". And cingular-chat into
/etc/pppd/peers/.
A few things to look for, modify, and be aware of:
In the cingular-chat script:
You may need to choose a line other than default under the "Set Access Point Name (APN)" section.
You may need to change the "dial-up" string under the "Dial the ISP" section. The documentation that came with your cell card should
offer this.
In the cingular script:
You may need to experiment with the settings under "Initial authentication" (such as disabling
data acceleration).
Edit /etc/resolve.conf and add:
nameserver [IP address1]
nameserver [IP address2]
Dialing
As root:
pppd call cingular [ENTER]
... you may need to CTRL-C and re-dial 3-4 times before the connection is solid and you receive an IP address from your provider.
