Introduction
IBM provides the most recent JRE/JDK available for Power Linux. To download it, you must create a (free) account on their website.
- Install an older C++ library:
- From the YDL Menu --> Applications --> System Tools --> Software Management --> Add/Remove Programs
- Select "Base System", check "Legacy Software Support", and then "Apply".
- When the pop-up window "Package Selections" is active, select "Continue".
- When complete, select "Ok".
- From the YDL Menu --> Applications --> System Tools --> Software Management --> Add/Remove Programs
- Point your browser to: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html, register, and sign in.
- Select "Download using http."
- Under the "JRE" menu, download the "rpm format" RPM with the option to open with "system-install-packages" (same as the application "Add/Remove Software").
- Enter your root passwd when prompted.
- The RPM will now install.
- This does NOT include a web browser Java plugin.
You should now be able to use 'java' to run JAVA apps.
